Shane found a small shop off to the side of the Empire State to use as his refuge. The only million other things that moved outside were those zombies. They moaned and hissed at each other in a chorus of mock unison. Shane sat leaning against the counter facing away from the windows. His 12 gauge lay across his lap and his eyes were closed in a slight light dozing nap.

Madison had been hiding out in the storage room of this little shop. The last time she checked she was the only one around, until she heard a noise in the front of the store and she jumped. She thought it was the zombies trying to get in. When she went to get up she bumped into a stack of boxes and something glass fell off and cut her forearm. "Damn" she mumbled as the glass vase crashed to the floor. Whoever or whatever was in here would surely know that she was in there. Madi sank to the floor away from the glass. With one hand she untied the black bandana that held up her hair and tried to tie it around her arm but it hurt and it was hard to do one handed.

Shane jerked awake and peered over the egde to look outside. Carefully picking up his shotgun he crept into the back area where the storage door was. "Its always one thing after another." Shane whispered as quietly as he could as he made his way down a short hallway. He came to the storage room door and reached for it but thought better. He took his hand back and decided if he should open the door to see what was on the other side or not. If he did and there was a zombie the sound of his shotgun going off might attract a whole mess of unwante attention.
Shane raised his rifle and with his other hand reached for the doorknob. "Anyone there?" He whispered quietly again to anyone who might be on the other side.

Madison cursed under her breath, she couldn't believe that she had been so clumsy. At least she wasn't really bleeding anymore but her forearm now hurt like hell. If her family back home could see her now, they'd wonder where the hell their little girl went. She kinda wished that she was back home in London right now. Madison heard footsteps and she tried to hide, but that just led to her making more noise and she was scared that at any moment zombies would come bursting through the door to eat her.
Madison pushed herself off the ground and was about to attempt to sneak out the back door of store when she heard a voice. Zombies couldn't talk so it had to be a human. Should she respond or should she go on hiding, she couldn't hide forever. She'd eventually run out of food and water. She sucked up all of her energy and glanced at the door from where she was sitting. "Yea, there's someone in here." she said not bothering to keep the fear out of her voice, she was scared.

Shane quickly opened the storage room door and at the same time he lowered his shotgun just as he pulled the door open. Shane looked down at the woman on the ground and saw the cut on her arm. Shane feared the worst for this girl right on the spot. He turned around to see if any zombies had gotten in and they hadn't. Shane turned back around and looked at her cut before looking at her. "I think there's some meds out in the front if you need them." Shane let his shotgun rest on his shoulder with the front of the gun facing the wall behind him.

When the door opened Madison looked up at the guy standing infront of her but the thing that she noticed first was the gun that was at his side. Guns kind of scared her but she knew that guns were the only way to keep them safe at this point. Madi didn't even know what was going on outside anymore. Madi waited as he looked around to make sure that there were not zombies around, surely he would have noticed the broken pieces of glass on the floor. She listened to what he said and simply nodded, she did have a headache. Madison stood up and walked past him carefully so she wouldn't touch his gun.
When she was out in the front of the store she noticed all of the zombies outside and she wondered why they weren't making more of an effort to break in. She sighed and went searching for something to make her headache go away. She was happy when she found a bottle of advil. She tipped two into her hand and popped them in her mouth and grabbed an un opened bottle of water and opened it. Taking a long swig she swallowed the pills and wiped her mouth on the sleeve of her sweater. "How come their not trying to get in?" she asked turning to look at the Shane. She adjusted the bandanna on her forearm while looking out the window. After a minute or two she turned to Shane and smiled. "I'm Madison by the way and thanks for not shooting me" she said before taking another sip of water.

Shane watched her walk past him to the front and Shane followed her. His shotgun still rested on his shoulder as he walked behind her. He saw the zombies that she saw and tried to answer her question to the best that he could. "They are not trying to break in because they haven't seen us." Shane made it obvious. "Now that we are standing they might see us and come smashing through those windows." Shane's piercing speckled green eyes peered through the window at the street beyond that held everlasting waves of mutated flesh of hell.
"I wouldn't dream of it." Shane replied in response to Madison's question. "The name's Shane." Shane walked to the counter which still held the cash register and thought that a world without money is a world without greed. The zombies continued to walk slowly past the store in a circle of unimpending doom. Shane now started to wonder why they didn't see them already. They should've been dead the moment the glass was shattered in the back. They should have been bleeding out and Shane would've shot himself already. But they were still breathing, which was amazing givin the situation.

Madi tried not to stare but while Shane had his back turned she couldn't help but let herself stare. It was those eyes of his that had reeled her in, they were some how more mezmorizing then her own emerald ones. She listened to his explanation and she figured that it was good enough but she couldn't help but wonder why they hadn't seen them still. The windows were bright enough for them to see through, weren't they?
Hearing him say that he wouldn't dream of shooting her made Madison laugh loudly and as soon as she had a hand flew to her mouth as she realized that zombies were attracted by sound too. She watched the window's carefully and slowly brought her hand down from her mouth when she was convinced that they hadn't heard her. When she had composed herself from her little laughing fit she smiled at Shane again getting lost in his eyes. She shook her head and casually ran a hand through her hair. "Nice to meet you Shane." she said strolling behind the counter and finishing the last of her water.
Madi gently placed the empty bottle in the garbage can and turned to face Shane as she let out a yawn. She was tired and wished that they could turn off the lights and catch some sleep. Madi couldn't sleep while there was a light on. That was one of the reasons why she had taken to hiding in the storage room, it was more dimly lit and it gave Madi a chance to get some sleep. Madi was always a forward person, never really shy around people she'd just met, specially totally gorgeous guys like Shane. She let out a sigh and then sank down to the floor where she could still see the zombies and where Shane could still see her just in case. "Is there anyway to kill the lights and get some heat in here?" she asked shivering slightly.

Shane continued to wonder why they were still alive. "Uhh... yeah." Shane commented as he came out of his stupor. "Yeah. I'll see if I can't get those lights to shut off." Shane walked back into the back area to try and find some sort of fuse box. After a second of looking he found a silver box mounted on the wall. He pulled open the latch like door and flipped switches until the power was out. He then walked back into the front room and back to the counter. "Sleep tight. I'll keep watch." He turned back around to face the window. The zombies contiued their walk in random circles without noticing that they were there inside the store hoping that they wouldn't be seen and still breathing.
Shane realized she was staring at him but didn't say anything for the sake of not being an ass. He laid his gun on the counter facing the windows in case of a break in.

Madi didn't exactly want to be alone at the present moment but she just nodded and watched as he disappeared around the corner and into the back of the store. She could hear him moving around and that was a good thing. It kept her from thinking that she was totally alone at the moment. She glanced out the window at the zombies humming an old lullaby that her mother used to sing to her. When a zombie turned it's head, Madi fell silent and she could have sworn that it seen her but she as she was about to call for Shane she noticed that the zombie that had stopped went back to walking in circles and Madi was able to relax a little.
She was just getting settled into a comfortable position when the lights went out and she sat straight up and froze until she heard Shane's footsteps followed by his voice telling her to sleep tight and that he'll keep watch. "Okay, but wake me up if anything changes" she said as she tried to get comfy again. Not being able to she crawled along the floor to where she knew Shane was standing and sat next to him with her back against the counter. She made sure that her legs were comfy before she leaned her head against Shane's leg like a pillow and closed her eyes.

A full hour passed and Shane's leg was starting to get numb from not moving for fear of waking Madison. Shane's hands were placed on the counter as he watched the zombies for that whole hour lost in the thought of what might happen if they suddenly cascaded through the window. He jerked that thought out of his head and felt his eyes flutter, not a good sign. He was getting tired. Shane placed a hand behind Madison's head careful not to wake her and softly held her held away from his leg as he slowly sat down. Carefully placing the shotgun across his lap after softly and slowly placing Madison's head against the counter he too placed his head against it, closing his eyes.
He slowly felt sleep start to seeth its way into his soul. Slowly, but not fast enough. His senses remained alert. He realized that he was touching Madison's arm with his own. But he didn't bother moving or opening his eyes.

Madi had fallen into a deep sleep quickly and was having the most amazing dream, that was until she felt something move her head and her dream was lost and she was half awake but not really. She heard Shane sit down beside her and without even thinking or realizing what she was doing she let her head fall until it was on his shoulder and she somehow managed to snake into his arms. She was freezing to say the least and feeling closer to his body was making her warmer. She snuggled into him and felt his arm touching hers.
She didn't want to but she opened her eyes and forced herself to look at him, even in the dark she could see his face and he looked so peaceful. She had gotten at least an hour of sleep so with her head still resting on his shoulder she stared out the window and watched the zombies but she couldn't keep her eyes open even though she thought that she'd be able too. Her eyes closed and she fell asleep again, her body was curled in a weird way up against Shane's.

Shane felt her curl her way into his arms and his own arm hesitated above her for a second before finding its way around her shoulders. She seemed cold and Shane felt like he should be the one comforting her because he was the only one with her at the moment surrounded by a fiery ring of death that hadn't yet targeted them. Shane kept his head resting against the counter and felt sleep becoming more heavier within his eyes. Compromising with sleep was impossible. He closed his eyes and felt himself pulling Madison closer to him for warmth because he felt her shivering. Shane took a second to look down at her nestled against him, she was sleeping like a rock so he thought.
Soon Shane was sleeping soundly and not even the sound of death outside could stir him from his slumber. His bare arm could feel the warm flesh of Madison throughout his sleep even though his wasn't awake his senses remained active. He heard the zombies outside but that soon faded along with his senses as the night wore on. He didn't wake up once even with the heavy truth of death waiting for them outside and while he dreamed he saw them making it through the night to the early break of morning where a shadow vale of destruction seeped its way through the cracks of the store and tore them apart. Shane felt his skin being ripped off his body and felt a thousand hands...
Suddenly he woke up.. sweat lightly beading his forehead. He blinked twice to become fully awake and fully aware of the early morning surroundings. He carefully released his touch from Madison and quietly stood up. He placed his shotgun on the counter quietly as the darkness remaind intact outside. There were signs of the sun breaking through but it was still dark. It had to be at least six in the morning. Shane moved around the counter and slowly walked over to the windows seperating the inside of the store from death. He nimbly placed his hand on the window. He felt an almost thick substance on the glass and a smile appeared on his face. "Tint." Shane said quietly. Tint had save their lives, tint had kept them alive through the night and tint made him sleep for the first time in a long time.

Madison was asleep but she was still aware of what was going on around her. She had learned that she could sleep but she still needed to be aware and she had perfected that. Madison didn't flinch as she felt Shane's arm around her shoulders, she just snuggled into him a little more and let her dreams take hold. Soon after being pulled closer towards Shane's body Madi began to warm up and her shivering stopped. She was peaceful now and soon dreams began to flood her mind, but they weren't pleasant like she had hoped they would be. Madi was alone in some dark place, but she could hear voices all around her. She could see the eyes of the zombies, she could feel their cold dead hands reaching for her.
She was trying to scream but no sound was coming out, she found herself clutching to something, something that she soon realized was Shane's shirt. As quickly as it came her dream ended when she felt movement beside her and she felt Shane's touch leave her body. She was starting to wake up now and she fought to keep her eyes closed but her body wouldn't let her. Her brain was telling her that she needed to wake up. Madison let out a small sigh and rubbed her eyes. She noticed that Shane was standing by the window and at first she was scared. She scrambled to her feet and stared from him to the window. She suddenly realized that there was nothing coming after them.
Right now there was no impending doom upon them. As long as they stayed inside nothing could hurt them. But Madi couldn't help but wonder how long the food and water would last. Madi noticed that Shane was without his gun and she kinda wished that he had it with him right now, just in case. She took a deep breath and walked over to where Shane was standing with his hand on the window. She ducked under his arm so that she was standing by his side except facing him. She wrapped her arms around his waist and rested her head against his chest. "We're not dead" she said, the tone of her voice made it sound like she was still tired but she wasn't. With a sigh she looked up at him, and tried to smile. "What now Shane?"
She didn't know if she was implying about the zombies or if she was implying about them. She knew that she had spent the night in his arms and he seemed pretty comfortable because he was pulling her closer to him. Maybe it was just because she was cold and he didn't want her to be shivering all night. Madi couldn't wait for the sun to pour in through the windows of the shop, it would at least put some heat in there. Maybe they could like a small controlled fire in a garbage can or something, or maybe that would draw attention to him. Madi wasn't sure what was going to happen, but she felt safe with Shane here, even though they had just met the night before she knew that he wouldn't let them hurt her.

Shane still had his hand pressed against the window as Madison ducked underneath his arm. "No we are not." Shane smiled at the fact that they had made it through the night. Shane picked her up in a two arm hug and placed her on the counter in a sitting position facing him. "I have to go make the back stronger so they don't get in that way." He stood frozen in time facing her, not wanting to move. But after a couple seconds he turned to go make the back stronger.
